Cottagecore!!!! Me and my life are finally ON TREND! Gardening, making, sewing, soap – I do it all and will not stop no matter how many decluttering experts encourage minimalism. I did run a handmade soap biz for a few years but was burning out and losing the love so I just do these for the fun of it now. I’m sooo excited to learn you too are into all things home and cosy Ash! I’ve heard rumours of your knitting prowess!

I’m currently obsessed with collecting as many handmade, framed cross stitch and long stitch pictures I can find. Someone – usually a mature aged lady – has toiled away for hours of her life making these and going to the trouble to have them framed – only to be dumped in an op shop by the family after she’s passed (I’m guessing) and sold for $5. I don’t understand why these things aren’t regarded as the treasures they are. I especially love ones of houses and flowers. Can never have too many.

Now, the only question is how do I turn this into a paid newsletter??? Maybe a Modern Fan Club??

Historical re-enactments are big! And historical based museums like Strawberry Bank in Portsmouth, NH or Colonial Williamsburg or Sturbridge Village are super fun. Where the business opportunity could be is actually in skill learning based historical vacations or historical experiences kind of vacations.

Like a theme vacation where you learn how to sew beautifully and maybe even learn how to make your own gown for a ball like party either at the end or a gathering once a year. Gowns take a long time to make… it could even be a two week or month long retreat or a repeat experience until your gown is done.

Or a historical patterns quilt based retreat – which would be amazing for someone who has been through trauma or lost a loved one – making a quilt with patterns their ancestors may have used with patches created to express good memories of loved ones passed or patches that are steps in healing. The real value is connecting with others who have gone through similar experiences while everyone is working on their own quilt or helping each other.

There could even be opportunities for a pottery based retreat where the experience of a historical pottery shop is created. I live in a town with a lovely little museum that includes these incredible jars that are so cool! Some so big it’s hard to imagine a human being able to make them by hand throwing them – but they were! People around here treasure the pieces still left in their personal collections because no one makes them now. It would be so fun to learn to make historical items like that because they are beautiful.

Could even do stained glass window making or historically inspired hat or music making.

Or even how to make your own bow and arrows for target practice while you learn archery would be so fun – especially if there are different types from different times or cultures that you can learn to make for repeat experiences!

Or about medicinal and food plants from a historical perspective. Even gardening through history!

An online course on beautiful cursive writing and letter writing would be cool. Especially if pen pals are part of it!

Anything that creates a hands on experience that helps people feel alive and creative and better connected with themselves and the delightful world we live in…. And learn about history so that as a society we can value the good there – learn to think for ourselves – and let go of staying stuck and assuming that someone else or AI knows better than we do. The value of history is learning so we can all grow to value each other, our world, and all life more fully and lovingly. If an aspiring nostalgia curator keeps that to heart – so many cool and wonderful ideas can flow! So looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with!
