hi, i'm ash!
Travel writer & host, cultural explorer, and architecture & interiors freak.
Every week, we're exploring global culture through the lens of the home. From floorplans to fixtures, we examine how houses are built, designed, and decorated around the world (with a side of sass, of course!)
The only podcast where we pass on the pyramids and poke around in the plumbing. I’m Ash, and I'm, exploring the strange, smart, and wonderful ways houses are built, designed, and decorated around the world.
A new series of OTHER PEOPLE'S HOUSES books designed to help you try on a new life in different places around the world—by getting to "go behind closed doors" inside local homes to discover what it's really like to live there.
Really elegant kitchen extension. I wish we had room for something like that. We still use my wife’s 30 year old crock pot which just has an off/on dial with hi or lo settings.
I know it. I am starting to see more “bar rails” that are skinny, narrow, tall tables that allow for stools underneath, and would fit up against a wall (say, in a galley kitchen). Much easier to fit than an island, ha! https://www.westelm.com/products/horne-bar-rail-h14121/
I love my crockpot. I had a normal Walmart version for years and then upgraded to a very fancy, worth every damn penny version from Williams and Sonoma. It is bigger, can brown the meat before starting the crock pot dish which saves time and dish clean up. It steams rice and more. Some chickens do lay in the winter (we have some) but they do slow down production for sure. The older they are the less they do in winter as well. I’m sure if the powers that be had their way we’d all live in town where we can’t drive cars but then who would do the farming, the cattle ranching and the raising of some of the foods we eat? The truth is the world, not just one political side or us folks that live in the country, is dependent on oil. Did you know that oil/petroleum is used to produce more than just gas for cars and as a component to plastics? It’s also used in synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon. It’s used in lubricants, pharmaceuticals and asphalt. It’s used in cosmetics (yuk), cleaning agents if you don’t use non toxic ones, electronics, toys and food packaging. Over 6000 items that people consume use products that have been made with oil. Even wind turbines that generate power use lubricants made from oil and oil is used in the production of parts for solar panels. I can’t imagine the number of businesses or daily life items that would come to a grinding halt if there was no oil production. This is a far bigger issue than the cars we drive unfortunately.
Williams Sonomaaaaaa. I just saw they have a line with Stanley Tucci and I LITERALLY WANTED TO CRY TEARS OF JOY. https://www.williams-sonoma.com/shop/cookware/tucci-greenpan
And, that’s fascinating (and extremely disturbing), re: oil. I knew some of those things, but not all. Yes, huge problem. Though the folks around here will notice the price of gas before anything else. They care about the price of gas. It’s always being talked about.
Crockpots are great! I didn’t use mine this winter, tho. I don’t know why. I’m bad at planning meals. Hey, I didn’t know Article had kitchen islands. I have been looking for one. Yours is nice looking. I need a smaller one. Like 48″ max. Wayfair has a couple but man the one I like is about $2600….yeah, no! Let me know if you see any other cute ones.
Ahhh, they actually have a smaller cute 44’“ one!!! The catch is that it’s only in white oak: https://www.article.com/product/26927/holme-44-kitchen-island-white-oak?queryID=161354f6dbfc7bd73777b2f60ef2c888&index=production_product
I originally ordered one for the cottage, because I have the tiniest space and wanted something where people could stand around in the kitchen, BUT, after doing their whole “view in your space thing,” I realized it would have to go in sideways, and it just looked weird. But it IS cute as a button (and not $2600, though still a grand, ugh).
Oh they do?? I didn’t see it but I’ll look again. Maybe I can stain it dark. Thanks!
Yesssssssss. I’ve also seen a lot of skinny narrow tall bar or counter tables that might work for extra counter space and also being able to put stools underneath – have been endlessly on the search for the perfect one for the cottage. It’s a teeny tiny space but I’m picturing if 3 people were there to go skiing, they might want some place to casually hang out while someone’s cooking dinner etc. lol this journey has been hilarious
I hated yellow for decades, but I have also started to fall in love with yellow. I call it a shade of gold though, much fancier than yellow. I would never be able to have a yellow — ahem, light gold — couch though… There would be pen marks all over it within 2 minutes of me sitting on it.
I would identify as an oxblood chenille sofa. I have recently decided that oxblood is my new favorite neutral. (Is it actually neutral? It goes with everything so I’m calling it neutral.) Bonus – it hides pen marks. LOL
For the record, I think the gold would look smashing with the green wallpaper.
(But I also think oxblood is neutral so I may not be the right person to ask.)
You are amazing, and SO IS OXBLOOD! Also, is it sick that I just like saying the word “oxblood?”
When I first got to the farmhouse, I tried painting the powder room in an oxblood-ish color—“Brinjal”—from Farrow & Ball (https://www.farrow-ball.com/us/paint/brinjal) but then the first coat ended up looking like I had just gotten drunk and splattered red wine all over the wall (or I murdered the plumber), so I back tracked faster than I should have and painted over it, but now I am sad! IT LOOKS SO GOOD IN OTHER PEOPLE’S HOUSES, I AM A COWARD, THIS MUST BE REMEDIED.
I have 2 crock pots. One is a three-section slow cooker, which is so handy for things like meal prep for one or two people, and one is a big crock pot for making large meals or cats of soup or pasta sauce come fall.
Now that I know such a thing exists, I want the fancy crock pot that pre-browns the meat. Off to Williams-Sonoma I go!
Omgggg Williams Sonoma is a DREAM. I saw they just came out with a line for Stanley Tucci and I about fainted: https://www.williams-sonoma.com/shop/cookware/tucci-greenpan
Also! I had never thought to LET PASTA SAUCE SIMMER IN A SLOW COOKER. I bet you get great depth doing that! 🤯 (And way less splatters, lol.)
Just wait till you try the Instant Pot! 🤯
Believe it or not, I had one in Philly—MUST PURCHASE AGAIN!!!!!!!!! I even remember doing one-pot pasta, lol. Way different texture pasta, but it was actually kind of good! And a dream for making a quick stew.
